This weekend the best UK Money Bloggers got together for the SHOMO Awards in London with Thinking Thrifty nominated in the Best New Blog category.
It was a fantastic event organised by Andy over at Be Clever With Your Cash, and a great experience to meet some giants of the UK Blogging scene.
The day started with me almost sleeping through my alarm (I’m not a 4am kinda guy), a sprint for the waiting taxi outside that Usain Bolt would have been immensely proud of, followed by a train to Lan-dan.
It was all going so well until the dreaded ‘Choob’.
First of all, it’s not the easiest thing to navigate your way around when you’re colour blind. However, I successfully navigated myself to the correct platform and promptly boarded.
It was at this point I was viciously attacked by a pissed off wasp with a stinking attitude.
I kid you not, I was sat there minding my own business when the little turd found its way up my trouser leg and proceeded to sting the life out of me, forcing me to bust a series of Michael Jackson style moves to shake it out – Shamone!
It gave the other passengers something to laugh at if nothing else.
I love the Welsh I do!
For the past eighteen months I’ve been continually meeting lovely Welsh people, the trend continued outside Euston Station when I bumped into the rather fantastic Kelly Eroglu from Reduced Grub who won the Best Frugal Food Blog Award after just 5 months of blogging – superstar in the making this one!
We pretty much spent the whole day together, she absolutely made my day and I was buzzin’ for her when she won her category.
Learning from the best
It was a learning day alright, with talks from Naomi AKA Skint Mum from the Skint Dad Blog giving us fantastic tips on how to maximise your traffic potential on Pinterest.
It’s definitely one area I’m not making the most out of and Naomi really blew my mind with her advice and tips, even taking time out to speak to me personally which I really appreciated – thanks Naomi!
Next up was UK affiliate marketing queen Emma from the From Aldi To Harrods blog, who gave us some great tips on how to effectively use affiliate marketing as a great source of income.
I’ll be taking her advice and buying the affiliate marketing course designed by one of my blogging heroes Michelle Schroeder from Making Sense of Cents.
It was great to sit and chat with the other UK Money Bloggers, in particular Jack from 5 Year Target, Holly from Thrifty Mum, Lesley from Thrifty Lesley, Lynn from Mrs Mummy Penny, Katy from Katy Kicker, ‘anonymous’ from Disease Called Debt, Ricky and Naomi from Skint Dad and Sara from Debt Camel – not forgetting the lovely Kelly from Reduced Grub.
I also came away convinced that Maria from The Money Principle should have her own TV show! “Sorry, but I’ve checked with my mortgage provider and they don’t accept chocolates as payment”
It has the making of a great little community and it wouldn’t have happened at all if it wasn’t for the hard work of Andy who created the UK Money Bloggers group, so big thank you to Andy for all his hard work.
Best New Blog
After genuinely believing I didn’t have a hope in hell’s chance of winning I went and bloody WON!
I’m not someone who suffers from nerves (unless I’m expected to get on a plane crazy fool), but I was absolutely bricking it from the minute we got underway.
I was up last so I had a nervous wait.
Apologies to the lovely lady who presented me with the award, I’m sure shaking my sweaty hand wasn’t the most pleasant experience of your life!
I can’t tell you how over the moon I am to win. There were some brilliant blogs in my category so I’m incredibly proud the judges chose me – thanks to you all.
48 hours later and the perma-grin is still plastered all over my face.
I’ve learned a lot in my eight months of blogging and I’m still picking up new things every day.
Being surrounded by such amazing bloggers on Saturday made me realise there is still so much more to learn, these guys know their stuff and it was a pleasure to meet them all.
Roll on the SHOMOS 2017!
